Dr Frédéric POUDEVIGNE, manager of the FAO ECTAD Bamako Regional Unit, is leaving.

Dear Colleagues,

After about four years of work on the Avian Influenza crisis and the establishment and management of the FAO ECTAD Unit in Bamako, I felt it was time to consider other professional opportunities.

Working with you in 23 countries of West and Central Africa has been one of the most stimulating and exciting experience of my career and I definitely left a piece of my heart in Africa.
I wish you all the best in your respective duties, and full success to the Regional Animal Health Centre in the perspective of a better prevention, surveillance and control of the priority diseases.
Dr Boubacar SECK is now in charge as regional manager ad interim, let us give him and his team, all the support to face these increased responsibilities.

Rabies is one of the most dreadful zoonotic diseases with 100% of fatalities when clinical signs appear.

Avian Influenza... What's next?

After four years of fighting for the control of avian influenza in our regions of West and Central Africa, it is clear that our efforts appear to have paid off: Since 2008, no outbreak of avian flu has been reported! We must, of course, remain lucid and humble: These results are provided by the successful combination of national efforts, technical and financial support from partners and from FAO in particular, but also by specificities of the poultry value chains, the geography and the climate of the region. Vigilance is therefore required: Although we are no longer in “times of war”, the disease is far from being eliminated, as evidenced by recurrent outbreaks in Egypt or in Southeast Asia…
