On October 23 through 24, 2008, was held at the Regional Animal Health Center (RAHC) for West and Central Africa, based in Bamako (Mali) "the sub-regional advisory workshop on the feasibility of a network on the socio-economics and biodiversity to support the fight against avian influenza and emergent or re-emergent transboundary diseases in Africa". The workshop, which was sponsored with the support of FAO-ECTAD, the World Bank (as Executive Secretariat of the ALive Platform) is the last stage in the advisory process which had been launched in August 2008 in three regions of Sub-Saharan Africa (West, East, and South), brought together 25 participants from different sectors (private, NGOs, research institutions, ministries, development partners, etc.) intervening or working in collaboration with the poultry sectors in the sub-region. In the course of the workshop, participants discussed extensively the stakes related to the feasibility, the launch and implementation of a sub-regional network on the socio-economic implications and in terms of the biodiversity of animal diseases.
After an initial half-day which was used for welcoming addresses, to the presentations by Mr Jacques Conforti on "the importance of socio-economics and biodiversity in animal health and the necessity to work in a network on these issues" and by Professor Cheickh Ly on "the feasibility of a Network on the Socio-economic and biodiversity to support the fight against avian influenza and emergent or re-emergent transboundary diseases in Africa" and a general discussion on the goals (programs) of the Network, the participants were invited to discuss in sub-groups on the usefulness in setting up such a Network and to develop proposals on the following themes:
Group 1 : Institutional Arrangements of the Network
Group 2 : Activities and Programs of the Network
Group 3 : Resources and Financial Management of the Network
The major conclusions and recommendations stemming from these proceedings were presented and discussed in plenary session. These discussions revealed the relevance and usefulness of establishing an Network on the socio-economics and biodiversity to orient and accompany the strategies to control avian influenza and emergent or re-emergent transboundary animal diseases in Africa.
